Different College Degree Options to Choose From

Going to college is very expensive. You have to think about the tuition and fees, board and lodging, school supplies and projects, personal expenses, transportation, and other things that you have to pay for. It is important that as a student, you are dedicated to finishing your studies and will be able to attain the career that you really wanted. Before you start looking for colleges, you have to know about the different college degrees. This will definitely help you in devising your academic plan and determine how much money you will need to earn a degree in your chosen field of career.

There are four types of college degrees, which includes associate’s degree; bachelor’s degree; master’s degree; and a doctor of philosophy. These degrees vary on educational programs and curricula. Each of these types of degrees has its own set of significant roles in career advancement, intellectual fulfillment, and personal satisfaction for different people. Note that the degree you will choose is mainly based on the type of career that you wanted to pursue. Therefore, students should carefully think about the degree that they will take in college.

Undergraduate Degrees

There are two types of degrees in this category: the associate and the bachelor degree. The average amount of time to earn an associate degree is only two years, while four years for a bachelor degree. The credits that you earned from an associate degree can be applied and become a bachelor’s degree. But you do not have to take an associate degree, before taking a bachelor’s degree program. You can directly enter a bachelor’s degree program.

Associate Degree

Associate degree programs are usually offered at vocational schools, community or junior colleges, and trade and professional schools. If you are seeking for a general education or a more direct professional training or credentials, then this degree is the right option for you. For a general education, you can choose between Associate of Arts and Associate of Science. It ranges from liberal arts, music, history, biology or chemistry; that can be transferred to a four-year bachelor degree course. For a direct professional training, you can apply for Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Engineering, Associate’s Degree in Nursing, and other exact labels for professional associate’s degrees.

Bachelor Degree

The degree programs offered can be finished for four to five years, usually in college and universities, ranging from large public institutions to small private colleges. The two most common types are Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.). B.A. programs are usually for humanities and social sciences degrees, while B.S. is for applied sciences and research programs. The most common fields for bachelor’s degree are business, social studies, health sciences, and education.

Graduate Degrees

After completing your bachelor’s degree program, you are now considered as a college graduate. But if you wanted to have more access in a professional job, then you should consider getting a graduate degree. In this program, you will be able to gain an advanced professional training in a very specific subject. The degrees offered are more complex than the undergraduate, which are divided into three parts: master’s degree, doctoral degree, and professional degree.

Master’s Degree

Master’s degree means that you will go above and beyond the normal level of academic achievement because you are going to study a specific specialization. After getting your bachelor’s degree, you can choose to continue your education and pursue a master’s degree. This is a post-graduate study that consists of one to two years. There are two academic programs, which is Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS).

Doctorate Degree

Some people who earned their master’s degree are continuing it to pursue a doctorate degree. The most common type of this degree is the academic Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D., which is primarily oriented towards training for research, writing and teaching at an advanced level. But nowadays, different programs for different fields are now available. There are now doctorate degrees for health professions, clinical sciences, education, engineering, biological and biomedical sciences, psychology, and physical sciences.

Professional Degree

These degrees are technically considered to be a part of doctorate degrees. But they are better understood, and most commonly known to be different than a doctorate degree. These professional degrees are involved with medicine, education, or law.

With the different types of degrees presented in this article, students should be able to devise a better college and career plan for their future. It will be easier to decide which degree to take, and then their choice of college can be narrowed down based on the degrees that they are offering. Early decision and preparation will greatly help the students to evaluate the success of their plan for the future, and more importantly, will avoid wasting time and resources because they are uncertain of their decision in life.

De-stressing Tips for College Students

Sometimes, college can be a really stressful environment for every student. There will come a time when you think that there is so much thing that you need to do that 24 hours is insufficient for a day. You will wish that you have the power to stop time so that you can rest or just basically breathe for just a minute or two. But you know that these things are impossible. You may just want to cry, hate anything that is around you, and just simply quit about everything. But you still know in yourself that you can’t simply do that and throw a tantrum or crying won’t do anything good for you that will lessen your workload. The more you think about the things that stress you, the more you’ll feel worse.

There are several things that make a college student’s life to be very stressful: being away from home, families, and friends; having new school schedule to follow; interacting with new people; loads of school works and activities; joining and participating in student organizations; having a job or internship; budgeting their allowance; the pressure to get and maintain high grades; eating right; with all of these activities while trying to get enough sleep. With all of these things going on in every student’s life, it is not surprising that you will experience so much stress. It is important to remember that all of these stressful experiences are just part of dealing with your daily life. As you experience these difficult situations, there will also things that you will acquire and learn which can be proven useful in the future. You may learn how to organize your tasks and manage your time properly. You may also learn how to effectively multitask. Here are some tips that will definitely help you to de-stress and relax so that you can focus on what you need to do.

  • Get enough sleep

This is one of the most important things that you need to do because, without enough energy, you won’t be able to do your tasks. Ideally, you should have 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Taking a nap during the day can also help you to be more alert and focus.

  • Eat healthy food

Eating too much junk food is not only harmful to your body but to your mind as well. Stress-eating or comfort food is fine as long as you don’t do it often. But if you are experiencing too much stress, you have to feed yourself with healthy food that will improve your memory and focus. You should eat fish, blueberries, walnuts, and almonds. Drinking green tea can also help you relax. You should also eat away from your computer or workplace so that you can enjoy your food.

  • Drink plenty of water

Water hydrates you and helps you to function properly making you more efficient. It flushes out toxins in your body and makes you less lethargic. The water makes your blood circulate more making your body de-stress.

  • Do yoga or meditate

Yoga can definitely help you reduce stress. Proper stretching and breathing can promote relaxation, relieve tension, and help you calm. Meditating can help you clear your mind, making you mentally relaxed.

  • Do simple stretching

Stress makes your body tenser, that’s why you feel certain body parts especially your shoulder. You can do simple stretching wherever you are, like in a library or your room, for a few minutes. Simple stretching can improve your mood and will relax your body.

  • Go for a short walk

You may think that you have to stay in your position and continue what you are doing, that you cannot leave your place until you are done. But this is a wrong way to do your task. Taking a small break and going for a walk will definitely help you to clear your mind. Walking also boost endorphins, the hormones that help reduce stress in your body. Consider walking to a quiet place like in a park or other green space. A quiet environment will put your body into a state of meditation.

  • Keep a diary or maintain a blog

When you feel that there is so much thing going on in your life, you just wanted to scream what you are feeling. But there are times that you feel that there is no one who you can talk to. Or you are just shy to open up your feelings to other. Writing your feelings down can help you have a bit of self-reflection. It might help you figure out the cause of your stress and be able to find a way and solve it.

  • Breathe deeply

This is the simplest way to help you relax. The extra boost of oxygen can help reduce tension and relieve stress. With only a few minutes, it will help in your mental health.

We don’t really have a choice when it comes to getting stressed, but with these simple activities, your body will be able to handle the stressful situations that college may bring to you. You will have a more relaxed body and a peaceful mind to work on your ‘To Do List’. So get on with your tasks and survive college. Just simply breathe and don’t forget to smile.

Choosing College: How You Can Help Your Child

Parents want what’s best for their children. We always think about how we are going to lead them to the right choices in life so that they will have the best future. One of the most important decisions that we have to help them is about their college life because we know that it will have a large impact on their future. Therefore, college preparation should be a top priority.

In terms of preparing our child for college, it is important to remember that you should not control their plans and decisions for the future. We are afraid that there will be lots of challenges in their lives that they will have to face because we’ve been in their situation. But in order for them to grow as a person, you have to let them control their own life. Let them explore their choices, and if ever they fail or choose the wrong decision, the most important thing for you to do as a parent is to lend them a helping hand when they need it. If you think that they are having a dilemma, let them feel that you will support and guide them whenever they need your advice.

College Finances

Before your child begins college application, it is important that you and your child talk about your family’s financial situation. Make sure that s/he understands your capability to contribute to their college expenses. But this doesn’t mean that they can’t apply to the school that they wanted. Encourage them to apply for scholarships and grants.

  • Be honest

Talk about your expectations from them and the difficulties that they may face during the application process. You can tell them about your own experiences to let them know that you fully understand their situation. Let them feel your support.

  • Scholarship, grants, and financial aids

If you were not able to have a college plan for your children, the other option is to help them apply for scholarships and grants. You can research which program can accommodate your children’s application. FAFSA is also important and should be applied immediately. The earlier you apply the more chances that your children will be accepted in the program.

College Research

Your children may want to search and apply for their college independently, but it is still important that you know what they are going through. There will be changes in college applications since you’ve graduated, thus it is important that you also make your own research about the whole college application. Do research about your children’s choices of colleges.

  • Check the college application processes.

From the time that you have graduated, there are several things that changed regarding the process for applying.

  • List the essential requirements.

Since your children will be busy with their school works, extracurricular activities, and the whole college application you have to be there to remind them of several things. Therefore, you should also be aware of the essential documents that they need to prepare and submit. There are also documents that a parent like you should be the one to file.

  • Note the college admission offices’ numbers.

You should also try and coordinate with admission officers. In behalf of your children, inquire about campus visits and information sessions.

  • Take down important dates for the submission of requirements.

Meeting deadlines is a crucial part of the college application. You can use a large calendar that you can put in your kitchen or living room so both you and your children will be reminded of these important dates. Don’t let your children miss an important chance of their future.

Standardized Tests

  • Talk to your children’s guidance counselor

Know your children’s class ranking and current standings in each of their subjects. Therefore, you will know if they need assistance in their academic performance. You can also ask them about the requirements for admissions.

  • Prep courses and prep books

If you think that your children still need support based on their academic performance, enrolling them in prep courses for standardized tests like SAT and ACT may help them significantly. Another alternative is buying prep books, where they can practice the tests.

  • Test day preparation

This is a very stressful day for your children and the thing that you can do is support them. Making a snack during their study time can help them. Before the test, prepare a healthy snack that will boost their energy. And after they take the test, you can reward them by simply going out to the mall or eating in restaurants. Let them relax after a stressful day.

Choosing the right college can be very stressful for your children. It is important that you are there to support them. You should also start reading up about colleges so you can answer any of their questions. It can also be a precious bonding experience for your family. It will lessen the stress that they will feel, and will be more fun and enjoyable experience.

Campus Visit Checklist: Things to Look For and Questions to Ask

One of the biggest decisions in our life that we need to make is choosing a college. You have to make the best choice because it will have a major impact on your life for the years to come. Thus, it is really important that students do a comprehensive research about their preferred colleges. With the help of the internet, it is easy to find answers to your questions about college. You will be able to know about the colleges’ history, the major and careers that they offer, the student council and the organizations, the major events that they held and academic schedules. There are also blogs from college students where they share their experiences. High school students will have a general knowledge of what these colleges can offer but read this information and stories from college students is not enough. It will be better if students will be able to experience how their day will turn out on a campus.

The ideal way to get a sense of life at a college is through campus visits. Students have to make sure that they will allocate a significant time and maximize each visit to explore each college. Preparation is very important. You have to make sure that you will have all of the necessary information that you need and be able to prepare the right questions that you wanted to ask. A campus visit will definitely help students to narrow down their choices and be more confident about the college that they will choose. Below is a checklist that can help you evaluate your options.

Before Campus Visit

  • Gather information: If there are several colleges that you wanted to check, you may want to keep a folder for each school. These folders will contain view books or brochures and other information about the college, such as the requirements that you need to submit and college classes and the majors that they offer. You should also check the campus’ website: read information about the school and blogs about it; check the career center; read the student newspaper and other publications; scan the bulletin board and see what students are posting. From this information, you can formulate the questions that you wanted to ask. List it in a notebook and bring it during your visit.
  • Call the college admission’s office and make arrangements: The admission office provides important information, especially to potential students. They are the one who you need to coordinate if you wanted to visit their campus. Ask them about their college tour and information sessions. In some colleges, they encourage the students to attend a class; meet a professor, admission officer, financial aid officer; eat in the dining hall, and stay overnight in a dorm to fully experience college life. You should ask about the admission office about it and carefully plan your schedule. Remember to take down the names and phone numbers of the person that will be assigned to assist you during your visit.

During Campus Visit

  • Go to the admission office: Before the campus tour, an information session is being held first. This is where admission representative talks to you or your group about the college. You can ask your questions regarding the admission process and requirements.
  • Take a campus tour: Check the buildings, classrooms and campus facilities like the dining hall, library, career center, and bookstore. You can walk or drive around the community to check the surroundings of the campus. While on the tour, you can ask the college representative about your prepared questions.
  • Attend a class and talk to a professor: In some colleges, you can sit in on a class and meet some of the professors. You can ask them about your preferred classes and the majors that they offer.
  • Talk with a financial aid officer: Pick up a financial aid form and inquire about its requirements, processes, and deadline for submission. Ask the officer about your options.
  • Talk to the students: Ask them about their life on campus and what they think about their classes and professors.
  • Stay overnight, if possible: Check out their freshmen dorm and its facilities, and know about their rules and regulations.
  • Take important notes: Jot down all of the answers to your question, especially about the college admission and financial aid options. It is also important to get the names of the people that you will meet on the campus and their business cards so you can contact them if you still have other questions.

After Campus Visit

  • Make notes about your campus visit: Write down your impression about the whole experience: the ‘feel’ of the campus; your interaction with the students, professor, admission officer, financial aid officer, and fellow high school student during the tour; and the aspects of the college that fascinated you. You should also write about some of your possible concerns like admission process and requirements.
  • Send thank-you notes or follow-up letters and forms: Thank the admission office and the people who helped you during your campus visits to let them know that you appreciate their time and effort.

With these campus visits, students will be able to experience how their first day in college will turn out. Most importantly, they will be able to evaluate if the college can offer what they need. So for high school students out there, start organizing your schedule and plan your campus visits.

After College: Job Application or Graduate School

After spending most of your time learning in school, you are now one step closer to facing the ‘real world’. However, this moment can be confusing and scary for every college student. Some are still not sure about their future plans, but there are only three choices that they need to think about: first, pursuing the career that they dream of; second, continuing their education in graduate school; and third, some might think of taking a break for a short time. Choosing what you wanted to do can be one of the toughest decisions of your post-undergrad life.

If you are a college senior, the most common question that will be addressed to you is, “What are you going to do after graduation?” For students that are still confused, it can be really dreadful. You wanted your family members and friends to be proud that you have an ambition and direction in life. But it is understandable to be confused at this stage of your life. You just wanted to think about what is going to be the best choice that will make your future be well-planned. For students who wanted to pursue a Ph.D., professors may advise them to directly continue to graduate school. And for those students who are comfortable enough in school life, they may choose to continue their education than to face their first-ever job search because it is less intimidating for them. According to some people, if you do not continue to graduate school after college you may never return to school to pursue your studies. In order to help you with your dilemma, here are some of the questions that you should consider to ask yourself before applying to graduate school or applying for a job.

  • Do your career goals require an advanced degree?

Make a thorough research about the career path that you wanted to pursue. In some cases, a master’s degree or doctorate isn’t necessary for you to be successful. Your dream career may benefit more if you gain real-world work experience instead of attending graduate school. But if you are still not sure what your career goals are, then it will be ideal if you apply for a job first where you can further discover your strengths and think about what is your real interest. In some professions like teaching, research, practice in medical or health fields, and law school, it is ideal that you apply to graduate school immediately after graduating in college.

  • Do you feel burnt out?

After years of careful planning, being loaded with school works, doing extracurricular activities, and you may even have part-time jobs and internship, it is normal that you feel burnt out of keeping up with all of these activities. If you feel this way, then it is advisable that you take a break for a while. If you are not fully committed to pursuing a graduate degree, then you should not apply. Think about the time and money that you have to invest, it may be wasted if you are not serious enough with your goals. It is also important to note that graduate school is more intense than your undergraduate experience.

  • Are you financially stable?

Do you have any student loan debt that you have to pay for after college? If you don’t have any financial support like scholarship, a regular income, or any savings in your bank account, then it is better if you wait for a few more years. Apply for a job after college and improve your financial situation by paying off your student loans first. Don’t think of adding up more loans in your existing one to be able to apply in graduate school. It is normal to borrow money but you should think about your future and the financial stress that it will give you. You won’t want to spend your whole life working just to pay off the debt you accumulated. After paying off your debt, you can now start saving up. If you still want to pursue your education to graduate school, then you can now start planning on it.

  • Did you receive any job offers?

Some students are lucky enough to receive job offers before college graduation. Again, research if the career that you wanted to pursue doesn’t require a graduate degree, then think about accepting the offer. If you think that you will gain career advancement and skills, matches your degree, and offers financial stability, then it is best if you accept it. Remember that you should not let this kind opportunity to pass you by and that you can still return to school in the future if you really want to.

Making a decision after college can be really confusing and stressful. Everyone experiences this kind of dilemma in life. And if you really need more time to think, you can take a break first. It is important to consider that you can always return to graduate school or apply for a job at a later time. The most important thing is to know in yourself that you really have a goal that you wanted to achieve and a definite direction to a bright future.

Posting content

Wow. My last post was back in 2015. I already forgot that I have a WP account. I think I’ll start posting again here. I’m still not sure about the contents, though. I think I’ll post some of the articles that I wrote from my previous job. To make sure that it won’t be flagged as ‘plagiarized’, I’ll use a plagiarism checker tool. Some other contents may also include random thoughts and even reviews. The reviews might be mostly about the things that I love, such as movies, U.S. tv shows, Asian dramas, mangas, animes, and much more.

For future readers, I’m not really good in writing or mastered the English language (I’m from the Philippines). So for the grammar Nazis out there, please pardon my future mistakes. Hell. I’m not even sure if someone will read my posts.

I don’t know if my post will include photos too because right now I don’t have a high-quality camera or phone. Maybe in the future? So for the meantime, it will be pure texts. The articles that I’ll post first are some college tips. I made this articles back in 2016 for an educational website. However, upon checking, it seems like it was not posted on the internet or any website. I think it is such a waste not to post these articles. I hope that people will find these helpful, especially college students.

Random Thoughts 09/24/2015

I am Me

July 28, 2009

They say that I’m the type of person who has a problem in temper, who gets easily bored, who doesn’t like to wait but the one who’s always late in appointments, who’s picky in food, who likes slacking off, the one that’s still childish in so many ways, who likes to get what she wants and not do any effort to achieve it, do things in her way, who likes to boss around people, say unpleasant things to everyone, notice insignificant things, who’s self-centered in a way, who always opposes rules, who always destroys things…

They think that I’m the black sheep in our the family, a troublemaker daughter, an uncaring sister, a bitch type of cousin, a best friend who doesn’t have time to communicate with her best friends, a friend who looks like she doesn’t care at all, a student who likes to slack off and relax only, and a snub type of classmate….

I know that all the things above are negative things about me. Some people may say bad things about me, but you know what? I really don’t give a damn. I’ll just live my life the way I want it to be. I won’t be affected by their opinion about me because I don’t like explaining things to other people because in the end they wouldn’t even understand. The only thing that people will be able to recognize in a person’s actions is the things that they were expecting. They’ll only see what they wanted to see. So let alone what they think of me.

The most important thing is that, I know myself…..

Rain

I really hate the rain…

Because whenever it rains

I can see flashes of our memories together

As the lightning spark

I can hear your voice

As the thunder roar

I really hate the rain…

Because whenever it rains

I feel so down

I’m drowning in my emotions

Emotions that I’m longing for you

Missing you, wanting to be near you

But still after the rain

No matter how hard it is

I can always see the light

A light shining down on me

A light that gives me hope

That someday

You and I will be together.
